これ/それ/あれ/どれ 

Today, we are going to learn Japanese demonstrative nouns.





これ kore
これ meaning this, is refers to something near form the speaker.

e.g.

これはほんです
This is a book.






それ sore
それ meaning it, refers to something relatively near from the speaker, but not enough close to reach it. Usually close to the listener.

e.g.

それはあなたのです
It is yours.


あれ are

あれ meaning that, refers to something far away form the speaker.

e.g.
あれはだれのですか?
Whose is that?


どれ dore

どれ meaning which, is asking question.

e.g.
あなたのはどれですか。
Which is yours?


Those are called こそあど words
こ=close to the speaker
そ= relatively close ( close to listener usually)
あ= far from the speaker and listener
ど=question

There're another sets of こそあどwords

ここ/そこ/あそこ/どこ here/there/over there/ where
こっち(polite version: こちら)/そっち(そちら)/あっち(あちら)/どっち(どちら)
 this way/that way/ over there/ which( way)

このほん/そのほん/あのほん/どのほん
This book /that book /that book/ which book

and so on.

So memorize below.

こ=close to the speaker
そ= relatively close to the speaker ( close to listener usually)
あ= far from the speaker and listener
ど=question
